The President's Residence, University at Albany
5 Englewood Place, Albany
Noted architect Robert W. Gibson was hired to build this
Washington Park estate for James E. Craig in 1887. Gibson's best-known
commission was the Episcopal Cathedral of All Saints, at Swan and Elk Streets
in Albany. The driving force behind the Cathedral was Albany's first Episcopal
Bishop, the Right Reverend William Croswell Doane, for whom Doane Stuart
School is named, along with Sister Janet Erskine Stuart, RSCJ.
The pink Potsdam sandstone building was purchased by the
University Foundation in 1998 to serve as the President's Residence. Romanesque
in design, the home features all-cherry cabinetry, paneling and woodwork
in a large foyer, a turquoise tile fireplace, and a wide staircase with
132 spindles. The living room is graced by a wood-burning fireplace, herringbone
inlaid wood floors, and intricately carved woodwork with fleur-de-lis and
grapevine motifs. Poured glass windows and thick pocket doors reinforce
the historic ambience, along with a Tiffany-style stained glass window
in the music room.
