    PRESENTS LIVING PRESERVATION WORKSHOPS

    Historic Decoration Problem-Solving:
    Period Wallpaper and Faux Finishes

    ALBANY, NY -- August 22, 2001 -- As part of its Living Preservation series, Historic Albany Foundation will present Historic Decoration Problem-Solving: Period Wallpaper and Faux Finishes on Saturday, September 15, 2001. The workshop will be presented at a location to be announced on State Street in Albany from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.  

    This information-packed workshop, presented in one of Albany’s most elegant private residences, will focus on period wallpaper styles from 1840 through 1880. The presenters will also discuss and demonstrate of quarter-sawn oak graining, marbleizing, and decorative painting of scrolls, in order to help participants solve their own decorating dilemmas.   

    Made possible in part by a grant from the New York State Council for the Arts, Architecture, Planning & Design program, this workshop will offer ample time for questions and answers. Light refreshments will be served.

    Presenters:  

    Robert M. Kelly specializes in wallpaper research, consulting and installation for the historic home. Notable jobs include Prestwould Plantation in Virginia, Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage, the Blue Room of the White House, and the Governor’s Mansion in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. He edited and published “Wallpaper Reproduction News” for nine years, and wrote “The Showroom Handbook for Wallpaper Installations,” a guide to traditional wallpapers such as blockprints, handprints, and European machine prints.  He currently publishes “Master Paperhanger Magazine,” a quarterly journal for professional paperhangers.   

    Jean M. Garrison is a decorative artist specializing in faux and historic finishes, gilding, marbleizing, trompe l’oeil, Norwegian rosemaling and decorative floral borders.  She has a B.S. in Studio Art from Skidmore College. Among her recent works is the design and execution of an elaborate cherub and floral garland ceiling mural at the Rockefeller Institute of Government, State Street, Albany.  
       
    Historic Albany Foundation is a private, not-for-profit membership organization founded in 1974 to promote the preservation and appreciation of historic buildings and neighborhoods in and around the city of Albany. The Foundation provides design and technical assistance to homeowners, advocates to preserve endangered buildings, and operates an architectural parts warehouse.
