ALBANY, NY -- August 22, 2001 -- As part of its Living
Preservation series, Historic Albany Foundation will present An Introduction
to Stained Glass and the Tiffany Windows of First Presbyterian Church on
Saturday, October 6, 2001. The workshop will be presented at in the Rose
Room at First Presbyterian Church, corner of State and Willett Streets
in Albany from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
This seminar will cover both a general introduction to
stained glass and an expository tour of the stunning Tiffany stained glass
windows of the First Presbyterian Church. A slide presentation will provide
an overview of the art, and answer many questions of those facing restoration
issues with their own stained glass treasures. Participants are invited
to bring their problem project (if it’s small enough) or a photo.
Nigel D. Johnson is the President of Cohoes Design Glass
Associates, Inc., a full service restoration, conservation, and new commission
studio. He has university degrees in both art and cultural history, has
worked in the field for 20 years. He completed his initial training for
over seven years on the priceless collection of medieval stained glass
at Canterbury Cathedral in England. Locally, his restoration work may be
viewed at the State Capitol, First Church in Albany, First Presbyterian
Churches in Albany and Troy, Troy Savings Bank and Music Hall, and many
other notable sites. National restorations include the Trinity Church in
Boston, the Texas State Capitol, and Memorial Hall at Harvard University
in Cambridge, Mass.
Made possible in part by a grant from the New York State
Council for the Arts, Architecture, Planning & Design program, this
workshop will offer ample time for questions and answers. Light refreshments
will be served.
The workshop is free and open to the public, but reservations
are required. For more information, call the Foundation at 518-465-0876.
