Events ALBANY, NY – January 7, 2001 – To celebrate Black History Month, Historic Albany Foundation will co-sponsor a conference about the Capital Region’s participation in the Underground Railroad. The conference, entitled “Telling the Untold Story: The Underground Railroad Movement in Albany and the Surrounding Region” will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2002, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 262 State Street in Albany. The Conference keynote speaker is A. J. Williams-Myers, professor of Black Studies at SUNY New Paltz, author of many articles and a book on African Americans in the Hudson Valley, and a member of the New York State Freedom Trail Commission. Workshops will be offered, along with a panel discussion which will include Professor Judy Wellman, Richard White-Smith, Sandy Stuart, and others. Lunch will be available. The program will feature a litany and songs remembering some of the fugitives whose names are known and who passed through the Capital Region. In addition to Historic Albany Foundation, co-sponsors include the Albany NAACP, New York African American Research Foundation, and the M.C. Lawton Club. The pre-registration fee is $15 and $5 additional for lunch. The Underground Railroad History Project is an effort to research, identify, celebrate, and preserve the Underground Railroad’s story in the Capital Region.
