VACANCY: Albany’s Abandoned Buildings Through Artists’ Eyes

Saturday, November 8, 2003

Historic Albany Foundation is seeking original artwork inspired by Albany’s vacant buildings.

VACANCY: Albany’s Abandoned Buildings Through Artists’ Eyes art exhibit opening on Saturday, November 8, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. will be held at Albany's old Federal Building, part of the State University Plaza. Those who attend the opening reception will have a first chance to view and purchase the works of art. The exhibit will be open to the public for one day following the opening reception. Proceeds from the reception and art sale will benefit the Foundation’s Vacant Building Initiative and Inventory.

The event is part of an effort to promote awareness of Albany’s endangered buildings through the Foundation’s Vacant Buildings Initiative. While the work need not be representational, we ask that the work be inspired by Albany’s vacant buildings. The Foundation will choose certain buildings featured in the art to highlight their history.

Participating artists will receive 50% of the proceeds of any work displayed and sold at the reception; the remaining 50% will benefit Historic Albany Foundation.

HONORARY CHAIR: David Brickman

David Brickman lived in the West Hill section of Albany for several years before he began to photograph there in 1993. As he has continued to shoot in West Hill and adjacent Arbor Hill, the project has become his central focus as an artist.

David notes “It is not the intention of my photographs to document this neighborhood in the classic journalistic manner, so much as it is my desire to make a worthwhile body of work in the confines of my own territory and to somehow show the poignant beauty of this American way of urban life.”

AWARDS

A cash prize of $500 will be awarded for Best in Show at the opening reception.

JUROR

Local artist John Dyer will serve as Juror of Awards. Mr.  Dyer is a contemporary realist painter who has exhibited his work regionally and nationally. He has won numerous awards in a variety of media.

INVITATION

Accepted artists will receive one complimentary ticket (a $50 value) to the VACANCY: Albany’s Abandoned Buildings Through Artists’ Eyes reception on November 8, 2003.

If you are interested in participating in this very exciting event or have any questions about it, please call the Foundation at 518-465-0876. We’ll look forward to seeing your perspectives on some of Albany’s most under-appreciated buildings.
