Our History

Historic Albany Foundation was first created in 1974 to advocate for the preservation of the Center Square and Hudson Park neighborhoods after the construction of Empire State Plaza and Interstate 787. More than 1,500 buildings were demolished for the new construction and a proposed cross town arterial threatened hundreds more. Since that time, the Foundation’s mission has been to preserve and protect buildings that have architectural, historic or civic value, by providing technical assistance, education, and advocacy.

Historic Albany Foundation has played a major role in shaping Albany’s built environment by working closely with historic property owners, neighborhood stakeholders, private developers, elected officials and government agencies.

We have spent the last 49 years working to protect Albany’s architectural heritage and we want to continue for the next 49 at least!
