This tour explores how a former common pasture on the edge of colonial Albany evolved into a densely built urban neighborhood filled with elegant Federal and Greek Revival architecture, immigrant communities, and stories of resilience and change.
The Pastures began as shared grazing land outside Albany’s original stockade. In the late 18th century, the land was subdivided into streets and building lots, laying the foundation for the neighborhood we see today.
In the 20th century Great Migration, African-American families moving north from the South also made the neighborhood their home, adding new cultural, religious, and social institutions to the community’s fabric.
